Appellate Defender Council
The Appellate Defender Council, an ILS advisory group established in 2018, plays an important role in providing insights which inform ILS’s efforts to increase the quality of appellate and post-conviction mandated representation. The Council has approximately 30 members, all of whom have deep, varied experiences and perspectives they generously share.
ILS has worked with the Council to develop several innovative CLE programs on topics ranging from attacking a waiver of appeal or guilty plea to drafting a persuasive criminal leave application. CLE programs are continually developed based on the needs of providers across the state. The Council has also discussed proposed appellate legislation, systemic challenges, appellate data and funding, best practices, and revisions to the ILS Appellate Standards.
